About 0.5 EOS per 1 KB.
Rather amazing to watch the price go up that high again.
Where are the dApps?
To be able to run on the EOS blockchain a Smart Contract would need some RAM too. Storing data like keys and stuff. Not huge though, but when a dApp gets many users it would need more RAM. It is not all that bad though for a personal account. The more it is used for different tasks the more RAM is needed. Users have to buy enough RAM for this with EOS.
One account I have on EOS uses more than 6 KiloByte {KB} of RAM. And I have some 3 KB in reserve for that on. My other account have less, but still about 5 on average, using more than 3. Overall that is quite some EOS, in value, stashed away. So before you start creating one account after another, think it through first. And you need some CPU and NET on stake. This can eat up quite some EOS.
RAM going at about half an EOS per KB is not that bad. It has been down to 18 cents EOS and it was fun speculating a bit with it. Although I do not consider myself a good speculant, I made a nice gain of 168% in about two days. Yet, I find it too time consuming and nerve wrecking. What I noticed while being active with several accounts is that I did need to stake EOS for more CPU for most of them. NET could be brought done though.
But what does it do?
Well, I got a few free Tokens airdropped. For some upcoming dApps. Also I did try MonsterEOS, but my Monster died within a day already. DecenTwitter I did use more, and my account still lives there. Everipedia is still testing and ONO I don't know. Yet I think dApps can be done quite fast, but some things really need to be thought about up front. That would be RAM, CPU and NET usage for the Smart Contract to run and the impact for the users.
It does remind me of the early days of Steem. All this stake, called Steem Power {SP}, the native Token Steem and the pegged Token Steem Backed Dollar {SBD}. Did I mention VESTS already, on a blockchain level the common divider and how about Reputation? For many it did take quite some time to grasp this concept. While currently there will be members that probably do not even know Steem is a Social Media platform on a blockchain.
EOS is a kind of that fresh, new and complex. One mistake I made was creating about a dozen accounts. While my main one already had gotten a cool random name, I also placed a bid on a name auction. One thing that is possible with EOS. To me it is clear that just creating 12 character accounts is a waste. Because it needs some EOS to function. This can add up to quite some value that could have been put to good use.
Complex and smart.
It is interesting to watch the RAM price of EOS move in realtime influenced by offer and demand. Speculating on it is a gamble though and I consider myself lucky. Yet I also know luck sometimes visites a fool, but it never sits down with him. There are those who are far better in this game than me. And I better stick to getting value out off producing something.
EOS has potential, quite a lot and as soon as done big dApps will run on top of it I expect the market price to go up. Some build in abuse restrictions need to find a balance, but could be quite usefull for Steem to watch closely. And I think it is great that Steem is going to use a Resource Credit {RC} system, starting with HardFork 20. This I do consider a smart step even though some might consider it Steem becoming more complex. It is closely related to how EOS secures itself against chaos.
Where will it go?
First let me remind you to only invest in Cryptos what you are willing and able to use. Speculating on EOS RAM might give some great returns at the moment, but it is still a big gamble. At some point it will be in the best interest of huge EOS stake holders to get the price of RAM down. And that might cause some extreme price drop. For the small investor this could be bad for business. But I do expect this to happen when the big dApps are going live on the EOS blockchain.
Things are still early day on EOS. Finding the right amounts for usage in RAM, CPU and NET values are a game in itself. Still trying to find the right balance. But it sure is interesting to be a part of these exciting blockchain times. And there is still more to come.
May the cryptos be with us!
RAM prices close to 0.5 EOS.
